"Hospodka's roots in Chicago's South Side come through loud and clear. Imagine a Bohemian Mike Royko. Hospodka paints a picture of Chicago that, like Royko, takes this immense and sometimes overbearing city, for what it is: dirty, unforgiving and home."
~Gapers Block
"John Hospodka's work is passionate, strong and true. Here is a powerful new voice from Chicago's hardscrabble South Side. I only wish Nelson Algren were alive to read and encourage Hospodka. He's clearly a chip off the old Algren block. Watch this guy. Read this guy."
~John Callaway "Friday Night" WTTW11
"Hospodka is my favorite kind of artist: unapologetic. He bangs out both the unsavory and the sweet with the fervor of a country preacher."
~Tracy Letts, playwright, "August: Osage County"
The Chicago that inhabits this engaging Literary Picture Show™ resounds with a barely missed deliverance.
South Side Trilogy introduces the soul of a Chicago that has one hand in the pocket of its own death, and the other hand in the pocket of its own ghost. As revealed through the varied literary techniques, and sound and images (performed monologues, original music, soundtrack music, visual art and video) that compose John Hospodka's innovative experience, Hardscrabble is the purgatory into which Chicago has arrived to gather a few breaths before being seized by the uneasy obligations of her own confessions; and it is the neighborhood into which Hospodka's vision has come to lurk amongst the South Side's imagination and bestow a mercy-tinged,
yet unapologetic voice upon the American literary landscape.
